The letter states,
“Since becoming a believer, I have never skipped a single day of morning and evening Gongyo, and chanting Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo. But is there any difference in the amount of merit between chanting by the Daishonin and chanting by someone like me who knows nothing?“The Daishonin replied,
“There is no difference whatsoever. Whether gold is held by a fool or a wise man, it remains gold. Whether fire is kindled by a fool or a wise man, it remains fire. Thus, there is absolutely no distinction.
However, no matter how much one chants Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo, if one goes against the Daishonin’s intent, nothing good will come of it.December, 1276
