Karma is beyond measure
I, Nichiren, suffering persecution, was not without past bad karma. Even when the Bodhisattva Fukyo was cursed, beaten, and cast aside by countless slanderers, it was surely the result of past bad karma; how much more so for Nichiren, who was born into a poor and lowly family.
Furthermore, considering the slander against the Lotus Sutra in the past, who could possibly fathom the depth of its karmic retribution?Just as steel is refined and forged into a superior sword, so too are sages polished through insults. The suffering I now face contains not a shred of worldly blame. It is solely for the purpose of atoning for past misdeeds in this life and through that, avoiding the path to hell.
